Dear Ms Coventry, Mr. Grospiron, dear all,
congratulations to both of you on your recent appointments as President of the International Olympic Committee and as President of the Organizing Committee for the French Alps 2030 Winter Olympic Games.
I am writing to propose the inclusion of synchronized skating in the Winter Olympic Games programme for French Alps 2030. I believe this discipline perfectly aligns with the evaluation criteria recently approved by the IOC Executive Board and would be a valuable addition to France's fourth Winter Olympics, following the tradition of Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968, and Albertville 1992.
Synchronized skating fulfills the key criteria outlined for Olympic inclusion:
1) Reducing cost and complexity: As figure skating venues and infrastructure will already be in place, adding synchronized skating would require minimal additional resources while maximizing venue utilization.
2) Engaging elite athletes: The discipline features world-class athletes who demonstrate exceptional technical prowess, artistry, and teamwork, with established international competitions governed by the ISU.
3) Global appeal: Synchronized skating has a passionate following across America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, with growing interest worldwide. Its dynamic, visually stunning performances would resonate with French spectators and global audiences alike.
4) Gender equality and youth relevance: Synchronized skating is uniquely positioned as a discipline that can include both men and women on teams, embodying Olympic Agenda 2025's commitment to gender inclusion. Its theatrical, athletic performances also strongly appeal to younger demographics.
5) Integrity and fairness: The sport operates under the well-established ISU judging system, ensuring consistent evaluation and transparent scoring.
6) Environmental sustainability: Utilizing existing figure skating venues aligns with the French Alps' commitment to sustainability and the "four-season tourism" model that respects local communities and environments.
As the French Alps 2030 Games aim to build on the sustainable model and momentum from Paris 2024, synchronized skating represents an opportunity to introduce an innovative discipline that reflects the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect while requiring minimal additional resources.
I respectfully request that the Organizing Committee consider proposing synchronized skating as an additional sport for inclusion under the opportunity provided to the OCOG. This addition would create a meaningful legacy for French Alps 2030 as the Games recognized this growing discipline and expanded team winter sports opportunities.
